Approach to counselling

My counselling work is primarily influenced by the principles of Psychosynthesis (often referred to as "a psychology with a soul"), which views the person as being on a journey of personal and spiritual development, encountering obstacles along the way.

The Psychosynthesis approach sees a person as more than the issues they present and places emphasis on the fact that each one of us has the wisdom within ourselves to find the answers to our questions.

Recognising the importance of the spiritual dimension of the human existence, Psychosynthesis places emphasis on getting in touch with our own - often unrecognised - potential, and sense of meaning and life-purpose.

My role is not to give advice but to help you gain more clarity around the issues you present, to facilitate the integration of conflicting aspects of your personality and help you become more aware of your choices.

Working within the Psychosynthesis model, I take a holistic approach to counselling, involving mind, body, feelings and spirituality.
I act first as a witness to your personal process, metaphorically holding up a mirror to your thoughts, feelings and experiences so you can begin to reflect on where you come from, who you are and who you may become.  Then as a guide, who gradually helps you navigate your inner landscape with greater ease, moving towards a sense of wholeness through awareness, acceptance and inclusion.

In addition to dialogue, I work in a variety of ways including free drawing, creative visualisation, writing, physical expression and dreams.  This depends on what you bring to the sessions and what I feel might be the most effective way of supporting you.

Confidentiality

The content of all sessions is confidential and is treated with respect. There are exceptions to confidentiality which will be discussed at the first meeting.

Practice

In accordance with the BACP ethical framework for good practice, I am in regular supervision.  The purpose of supervision is that I gain further insights into the way I work with my clients, in order to provide the best possible support to them.  Client anonymity is always maintained.
I also use on-going personal and professional development activities as ways of deepening my knowledge, self-awareness and ability to self-reflect.

The first meeting

The first appointment is an opportunity for both of us to decide whether we wish to work together and, if so, negotiate a counselling contract.
I will ask you some questions about yourself, your history, what makes you seek counselling at this time in your life and your hopes from counselling.
We will also discuss how I work, fees, confidentiality and the practical arrangements for working together.

Location

I am based in London with practices near London Bridge (SE1, Jubilee Line, Northern Line) and in Willesden Green (NW2, Jubilee Line).  Both locations are very easily accessible by public transport.  I offer daytime and evening appointments.
